Ethan is working on the Citizenship in the World merit badge at a merit badge pow wow, and needed to attend or participate in an international event or ethnic festival. My first thought was Oktoberfest. So we did some research to see if there would be an Oktoberfest celebration anywhere nearby and found one in Snowbird and planned on attending the Saturday between the two sessions of the pow wow.
Before we went we learned a little bit about what the Oktoberfest is. It began as the celebration of a German Royal wedding between King Ludwig I and Princess Therese. The celebration included performances, horse races food and beer tasting. Today it seems like it’s just been turned into a huge beer fest. Which really is very sad.
They didn’t want to look at the camera because the sun was shining in their faces, but I wanted a picture with the sign that says “Oktoberfest” in the background. 🙂
We didn’t really do a lot while we were there. The lines for food were insanely long, there were LOTS of places to get beer, and there were some rides and things but to have access to those it was about $50/person and those things really have nothing to do with Oktoberfest anyway they are only there because they are part of the ski resort where the Oktoberfest was held.
We did get to listen to live German music though!
Since the lines for food were so crazy, and there was nowhere to sit even if we got some food, we decided that we would just go into town to go to Siegfried’s to get some German food to eat. That was a really fun German market/delicatessen that Kyle and I will have to go back to and get a closer look at sometime when we don’t have all the kids with us. 😉
