Testimonies

Opening Song: “My Redeemer Lives” Hymn #135

Opening Prayer: Tyra

Lesson: We talked to the kids about what a testimony meeting at church is and then went on to talk about what a testimony is. We pointed out the 5 major parts of a testimony.

  1. Jesus is the Christ and our Saviour
  2. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the true church
  3. Joseph Smith is a prophet of God
  4. The Book of Mormon is true
  5. President Thomas S Monson is a true prophet that receives revelation for the Church on the earth today.

Family Council

Opening Song: “A Happy Family” Children’s songbook pg 198

Opening Prayer: Jeremy

Scripture: Abraham 5:3 “And the Gods concluded upon the seventh time, because that on the seventh time they would rest from all their works which they (the Gods) counseled among themselves to form; and sanctified it. And thus were their decisions at the time that they counseled among themselves to form the heavens and the earth.”

Lesson: We as a family need to start having regular family councils. So we discussed with the kids that a family council is when we get together, and make plans (meals, vacations….), and talk about problems, and discuss schedules (making sure everything is on the calendar), and maybe a time to discuss the budget.

A Family council has three parts

Part 1: Mommy & Daddy

  • Talk about our commitments/schedule for the week
  • Discuss each member of the household
  • Discuss extended family commitments
  • Discuss anything else that comes up that we need to discuss between ourselves

Part 2: All family members

  • 1 by 1 each family member mentions their commitments for the week and all will be recorded on the calendar. Next week return and report.
  • Anyone may bring up a problem that they have observed, BUT they MUST also have a possible solution.
  • Everyone must say something nice about everyone else (and NO you can’t skip anybody).

Part 3: Father & Mother interviews (with each child individually)

  • Start with a compliment
  • Ask what is going on in their life. Problems? Challenges? Triumphs?
  • Share information with the child. The point of the interviews is to work on your relationship with each child as an individual, and to help each child learn to trust you with their problems. We want our kids to feel like they can talk to us, and this is a perfect setting to establish a relationship like that.

SO as a family we decided that Saturday morning we would have our first family council, and we’ll see how it goes. 😉

Family Temple Trip

Today our family took a trip to visit the Provo Temple. I don’t think I’ve been there since they put Moroni on top (and they did that awhile ago). Jeremy and Dinah have never been to that temple that I can recall. So I thought that we would take a family field trip and go see the temple. We took a picnic dinner, which the kids have been excited about all week. We have been deciding what foods we would take, and we bought some special treats, that we don’t normally buy to include in the picnic feast. I was really excited that we would finally get to use a picnic basket that had belonged to my grandparents that I had inherited, to carry our food to the picnic spot. We had an enjoyable walk around the temple first, and then picked a spot under some trees at a little park across the street from the temple to eat our picnic dinner.

The kids really enjoyed being at the temple, and just loved the idea of a picnic. Jeremy STILL isn’t feeling very well though so he was somewhat clingy, and complaining of his belly hurting. But everyone had a good time.

Tithing Short & Sweet with a Treat Lesson 19

Opening Song: Children’s Songbook pg 150 “I Want to Give the Lord My Tenth”

Opening Prayer: Tyra

Scripture: Malachi 3:10-11 “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts.”

Lesson: What is tithing? Tithing is one tenth of the money that we receive. The simple fact that Kyle has a job, and that he makes money is a blessing given by our Heavenly Father, and all he asks in return is that we give back one tenth.

Elder Dallin H Oaks (Quorum of the 12 Apostles) said that his mother, a widow, paid her tithing even on a schoolteacher’s small income. She told him that they could not get along without paying tithing. She explained that she could not raise her children as a single parent without the blessings of the Lord she received by paying an honest tithe. The Lord has promised to bless us when we pay our tithing (see “Tithing”, Ensign, May 1994).

Activity: Tithing Helps matching game. The book Short & Sweet with a treat, comes with a cd rom to print off activities to go with the lesson, and that’s where we got these pieces to play the matching game. 🙂

Closing Song: Children’s Songbook pg 150 “I’m Glad to Pay a Tithing”

Closing Prayer: Ethan

Emergency Telephone Numbers FHE Manual pg 323

Opening song: Children’s Songbook pg 276 “Do As I’m Doing”

Opening prayer: Jeremy

Lesson: Tonight we made a list of phone numbers that we felt might be useful in the case of an emergency. We included obvious numbers like 911, and Poison Control, as well as close family members, and the doctors and home teachers and the bishop. We will print out and post the list either on the fridge or near the phone.

Closing song: Children’s Songbook pg 95 “I Love to See the Temple”

Closing prayer: Daddy
