Visiting Family 🙂

For family home evening tonight we went to dinner at Granny’s house. I made a couple of cheesecakes for dessert and Granny had made meatloaf for dinner. Laurel & Roine and their family were all sick and they didn’t come, so after dinner the kids ran around for a bit then we took some cheesecake and meatloaf over to them.

Daniel Trusts in the Lord ‘The Friend’ June 1998, 34

Opening Song: Children’s Songbook pg 160 “Choose the Right Way”

Opening Prayer: Tyra

Scripture: Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Activity: Construct a flannel/felt board-We used a piece of foam board and covered it with a large white piece of felt (we used masking tape to hold it on, but I don’t know if it’s going to hold very well :-/ )

Lesson: Prepare by making the felt board pieces available at the above link. Using the felt board, and felt story pieces, tell the story of Daniel and his friends refusing to eat of King Nebuchadnezzar’s food, because they stood for what they knew was right and would only eat a healthy diet (Word of Wisdom).

Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy “Short & Sweet with a Treat!” Lesson 22 & “52 Weeks of Family Night” Lesson 48

Opening Song: Children’s Songbook pg 157 “When I Go To Church”

Opening Prayer:Tyra

Scripture: Mosiah 18:23 “And he commanded them that they should observe the sabbath day, and keep it holy, and also every day they should give thanks to the Lord their God.”

Lesson:Sunday is a special day, and is a day of rest. When Christ was finished creating the earth and all things that are in this earth He rested. Genesis 2:1-3

“Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.”

Keeping the Sabbath day holy is a commandment. Exodus 20:8-11 says

“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor they son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

We can try to keep the Sabbath day holy (holy means special) by preparing for Sunday on Saturday. We can:

  • Clean the house, so we don’t have to do that on Sunday.
  • Prepare our Sunday clothes so they are ready and we don’t have to go looking for them. We wear our Sunday clothes all day to remind us that Sunday is special and different than the other days of the week.
  • Make preparations for our crock pot Sunday dinner so all we have to do is put the food in the pot and not really have to cook to have a nice meal on Sunday.

We can keep the Sabbath day holy by:

  • Going to church.
  • Watching movies that mommy & daddy have approved for Sunday viewing.
  • Taking naps to rest our bodies.
  • Reading our scriptures.
  • Spending time with our family and those who mean the most in our lives.

On Sunday we do not:

  • Go shopping, or eat out.
  • Work.
  • Wear our grubby lazy clothes.
  • Play outside like it was a normal day.

“The Sabbath is a blessing to man as a time of spiritual growth and refreshment….Persons who fail to keep the Sabbath lose an opportunity for spiritual growth and forfeit the rich companionship of the Spirit of the Lord.” Elder Dallin H Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles (BYU Speaches, September 10, 1974, 218).

Activity: Construct a Sunday box which will be a box that is only gotten out on Sunday. Include activities to help keep children occupied while still keeping the Sabbath Day holy. Some things we put in our box include:

  • Book of Mormon Prophets cube puzzle (each side of the cube belongs to a different puzzle, so it’s really 6 puzzles in one)
  • Stationary for writing to grandparent’s and other long distance relatives (don’t forget to include stamps and envelopes so you don’t have to go looking for them and end up forgetting to send the letters.)
  • “Who am I? a gospel ‘guess who’ game”
  • A card for each movie that is approved for Sunday viewing (that way we can keep the movies in the cabinets, but there is no guessing about which movies can or can’t be watched on Sunday). Some of our Sunday approved movies are: “Mountain of the Lord”, “Legacy”, “The Testaments”, “The Best Two Years”

(We plan on adding other activities to our Sunday box over time and we will keep you posted 😀 )

House of Order Family Home Evening Manual, Lesson 20 (pg 89)

Opening Song: Hymn 215 ‘Today while the Sun Shines’

Opening Prayer: Tyra

Game: Come to Order-Dad tells the family to line up in different orders, such as by age, size, birthday….. after playing the game point out that somebody had to be giving the directions in order for everyone to know how to line up.

Scripture: Doctrine & Covenants 132:8 “Behold, mine house is a house of order, saith the Lord God, and not a house of confusion.”

  • We want our house to be the same, we want to establish order and end the confusion that we are experiencing.
  • Heavenly Father gives us directions (such as these) because He loves us, and He wants us to be happy and to be like Him.

Parent’s Responsibilities:

  • Preside (to give direction or to take charge)
  • Teach the Gospel-As parents it’s our responsibility to teach the gospel to our children. FHE helps us accomplish this goal.
  • Be an example-One of the best ways to teach is by example.

Mommy dress up-Here I left the lesson to go dress up as a maid, with an apron. On the apron I pinned a piece of paper that I had written “Maid” on. I came back to the living room picking things up as I came. Then we proceeded to point out to the children that I am NOT a maid and that what I was currently doing in picking everything up was not one of the jobs we had just established as being mine.

Children’s Responsibilities

  • Obey-Ephesians 6:1 “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” Here play a game to teach obedience. Have Dad with some m&m’s in his pocket stand up and ask individual members of the family to do something. Start simple with things like ‘Come here’ and move on to things like ‘Pick up 5 books’ and when the individual completes the task Dad gives them an m&m. Then he asks someone else to do something. The children will quickly learn obedience when candy is involved. 😉
  • Honor Parents-Ephesians 6:2-3 “Honour thy father and thy mother; (Which is the first commandment with promise;) That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
  • Contribute-Each family member is responsible to help make the family happy and strong. Discuss with the children ways they can contribute to the family and household.

Closing Song: Children’s Songbook pg 198 “When We’re Helping”
