Little Helpers

Every month home depot has a workshop for kids where they get to make a project from start to finish. We’ve never actually been for one reason or another, but this morning we remembered about it ahead of time and planned on it. So Kyle took Ethan, Tyra and Jeremy and they each got to make a pencil box. At home depot they were also each given an orange home depot apron, to help protect their clothes while they were working on their projects. And they got a pin to represent their project to pin on their apron, and when they finished they received certificates for a free kids meal at Del Taco. They had LOADS of fun, and they have been carrying their pencil boxes, and the skateboard toys that they got in their kids meals around all day today.

This afternoon Kyle was putting together a new video cabinet so we can lock away the rest of the movies so little hands don’t hurt them. I was working on cleaning the kitchen and rearanging stuff in the storage room, but at one point I turned around and saw that Kyle had a bunch of little helpers in orange aprons:

I thought that was just so cute. 🙂

Cub Scout Day Camp

Ethan got to go to his very first day camp for cub scouts, yesterday and today. He had so much fun. He got to make a small catapult and some blue slime and he got to whittle a bar of soap (he’s not advanced enough to whittle wood 😉 ), and he got to make a glooba:

It’s really a small bagpipe made with a latex glove and it has a deep sound like a tuba, so the boys decided to call it a glooba. Yesterday he got to participate in some archery, and today he learned about and practiced shooting a bb gun. He got to bring home his target paper that he had to shoot and it’s actually got a few holes in it. 🙂

He had loads of fun at his first camp and he is really loving being in scouts.

The value of learning to WORK

We have started this summer off with teaching Ethan to work! I remember by the time I was his age I could fold laundry, do dishes, change diapers, and make simple meals (like spaghetti) all by myself. I also started mowing the lawn at a pretty young age too. So today I decided to have Ethan ‘help’ me mow the lawn. Really I did most of the work, and having him in front of me made it harder for me to push the mower, and I did trip on his feet several times as we were going, but the boy needs to learn sometime.

I have decided to make Ethan my personal shadow this summer, which means that if I’m folding laundry he is learning to fold laundry. If I’m doing dishes he is learning how to do dishes and so on. So we’ll see how that goes. 🙂

Last day of school

And here it is, the LAST day of school. And they started late today at 8:45 and got out super early at 10:15. They weren’t even there for 2 hours so I’m thinking what is the point of even having today be a school day?

Kyle worked on memorial day and so he got to stay home today, and after school he went down to pick up the kids and get pictures of them with their teachers. And our 2 kitties followed him almost all the way there. So he decided to take a picture.

Ethan’s teacher was Mrs Washburn, and I think she was a very good teacher for him. Having had lots of kids herself she could understand him and I’m so glad that she didn’t mind him bringing (and wearing) his batman cape to school every day. 😉

Tyra is VERY upset that today was her last day in Mrs Jaque’s class, but I think she will soon get over it and next year she will learn to love a new teacher. 🙂

Ethan’s First Pinewood Derby

Ethan had his first pinewood derby tonight! We’ve spent the past few weeks thinking about how to make his car and he didn’t like any of my ideas. He had his heart set on making a bat-mobile (Kyle recently bought  the lego Batman game and since then Batman has been Ethan’s new obsession). I honestly didn’t know how we could pull off a bat-mobile but in the end we just handed Ethan the hack saw and said ‘go to it’. He ended up cutting it out mostly by himself (Kyle did help a little after Ethan had given it a good try), he sanded it down and painted it. Then he cut out a Batman symbol and some windows that he drew and glued them to the car, he even put wings on the back. Kyle helped with putting the wheels on and it was set to go.

We got to the church early so his car could be weighed in and it was a bit under weight so they gave him some weights to put on it if he chose (which he did, so he stuck them on the underside of the car).  Then we watched them set up the track, they explained how things would work and the racing began. Each boy’s car went down the track 6 times, their slowest speed was thrown out and the 5 other speeds were totaled up to get each boy’s final score.

I think Ethan’s car did pretty well. In the end looking at all the boys final scores they were really competitive. I mean one hundredth of a second faster and you could have moved up by one place, they were really close. Ethan ended up placing 17th out of 22 boys. Not bad, and I am glad to report that he wasn’t as upset as I was expecting him to be. He had a good time, and now we have a better idea of what to expect for next year. And I’m really glad that I can say my son made his car by himself (with only minimal help) and he wasn’t one of the boys who had their dad make it for him! 😉
