Trip to Texas

We left home yesterday afternoon to start our journey to Texas. I really wanted to leave Wednesday afternoon after Jeremy got home from day camp but we were not prepared to go. In addition to finishing the packing we were still trying to find an animal sitter. Everyone we asked wasn’t going to be home either. We spent Thursday morning still looking for an animal sitter, and we left as soon as we left the key with the sitter we finally found.

On the drive as we headed south in Utah I saw this awesome cloud, and it looked like it had a smiley face. So I had to get a picture.

We drove all afternoon and into the night. We drove east into Colorado, and continued on a south eastern route. I remember an attendant at a gas station in Montrose, Colorado warning us when we stopped about 10 pm to fill up that the next big town, Gunnison, was about an hour away and that after that there would be NOWHERE to stop for a very long time. Well he wasn’t kidding. We got to the next big town around 11pm and Kyle felt like we should push on just a bit further before stopping for rest. We ended up driving several more hours. It was about 2am when we finally drove through a very small town with two hotels. Kyle ran into one of them to find out how much they charge and came back saying “$200 for one room”. Ugh! I refused to pay $200 just to take a nap! So we kept driving. We passed through the northeast corner of New Mexico in the early morning hours, and we crossed the northwest Texas border about breakfast time. We stopped to get gas again, but there was nowhere to get some breakfast. I had lunch meat and other sandwich stuff packed, but that wasn’t breakfast. I ended up passing out some dried fruit (blueberries, cherries, apricots) for a breakfast snack to hold everyone over till we could find a place to get some food.

Later on we stopped at a dairy queen and let the kids pick out an ice cream treat. I had an pina colada julius and Kyle had a shake. Then we swung by a McDonalds to get some nuggets for lunch. Then we got back to driving.

We got to Cheddar’s, the restaurant Debby chose for dinner, about 6pm. I honestly don’t remember if that was Texas time or the time in the van (which would be Utah time). We were so exhausted and out of it by this point. We unloaded all the kids at the restaurant and Grandma and Grandpa offered to watch them there, while Kyle and I got back in the car to go to the office to get a pass to get onto the base. We got that all taken care of and went back to the restaurant and were seated shortly after we got back. Dinner took awhile to come out, and by the time it did I was just too exhausted to think about eating. We finished up and the restaurant and followed Debby to her house, we unloaded only the necessaries and went to bed.

Cub Scout Day Camp

As I mentioned before, there were some issues with the cub scout day camp this year. They thought they had our pack registered for day camp, and then found out that it hadn’t gone through, but nobody said anything about that until the day before day camp was supposed to be happening. Then there was a scramble to find another day camp that would let our boys squeeze in at the last minute. They found one, but it happened to be after we were supposed to leave for Texas. We asked Jeremy what he wanted to do, and it was obvious that he REALLY wanted to go to day camp. So we delayed our departure, and here we are. Jeremy spent yesterday, and today at day camp. He had a really good time. Here are a couple of pictures that his leaders have shared:

Jeremy is the kid with the bushy hair right in the middle of the row. I’m sure he had a really good time. 🙂

Project

We were supposed to be on our way to Texas a couple of days ago, but issues with the cub scout day camp has delayed our start. However, Kyle already had the time off so we are trying to make the most of it, by getting a project done! 🙂

Kyle had the idea of laying some bricks down to create a foundation for our trash cans to sit on. It’s hard to get them in and out of that corner when the ground is muddy and this would make it easier to move them, and it would make the area look nicer. We already happened to have a whole bunch of the bricks from when we were considering making a full patio out of them. That didn’t work out, but we did use them under the playhouse for awhile. The playhouse hasn’t been sitting on them since we had the sprinklers in the backyard redone, so it was time to give them a new job.

Kyle has worked on the job for the past few days. We had to buy eight bricks to get the area finished, and now it looks beautiful!

Chloe lost a tooth

Chloe lost her first tooth. She has already had one visit from the tooth fairy, back when she had a tooth pulled by the dentist, but this is the first time a tooth fell out because it was ready. Look at how confused she looks about all of this!

I really don’t know why Kyle didn’t have her rinse out her mouth before taking the pictures. I guess he thought a bloody mouth would be more impressive…
